Avi Weisfogel has made a name for himself as New Jersey’s most pre-eminent dental specialist. After founding his own practice, Old Bridge Dental, shortly after graduating with an M.D. in the dental sciences from the New York University School of Dentistry, Dr. Avi Weisfogel set out to change the face of dentistry forever. Through his own intense personal research, he came to the conclusion that dentists weren’t doing all they could to create value for their patients. He thought that more could be done. He believed that dentists can become multidisciplinary practitioners, specializing in a number of different fields, not just dentistry.
One of the key insights that Dr. Weisfogel had, over the course of the approximately 10 years that he spent building his own private practice, was that dentists were often being seen by patients at rates that far exceeded those that patients saw their general practitioners or family physicians. This meant that, over the course of five or ten years, many patients would not see a doctor at all. But these same patients oftentimes saw their dentist multiple times within that period and resume him.
This meant that dentists had strong potential as frontline soldiers in the fight against insidious diseases. Dr. Weisfogel knew that many diseases of the head neck and mouth area were most effectively treated when they were caught early. This often meant that even the patients themselves did not know that they had the disease at the stage when it would be most likely to be able to be completely eliminated and learn more about Avi.
Dr. Weisfogel set about researching all of the diseases that dentists would be in a position to diagnose and treat and that also posed a serious mortality threat to the patient. He also looked for diseases that had not seen substantial improvements in both morbidity and mortality over the prior 50 years. He finally found his mark with a disease called obstructive sleep apnea and Avi’s Youtube.
Obstructive sleep apnea is one of the most under-appreciated killer diseases in the country today. With over 90 percent of people suffering from the disease not aware they have it, it presents a significant challenge to the maintenance of public health.
Through Dental Sleep Masters, Dr. Weisfogel has taken the fight against obstructive sleep apnea to the next level.
